
What does NDIS fund?
NDIS supports lists now available
Effective 3 October 2024, participants will be permitted to utilize their NDIS funds solely for items designated as NDIS supports. Furthermore, there exists a list of items for which NDIS funding is not applicable. In specific circumstances participants may have the opportunity to request a substitution from the replacement support list.

What does the NDIS fund?
Funding for requested support will generally be approved if it meets all of following criteria:

it addresses your impairments in accordance with disability or early intervention requirements, or both
-
it aligns with your individual goals and aspirations
-
it facilitates your social and economic participation
-
it demonstrates value for money, which includes (i) the cost being comparable to or lower than alternative options that provide equivalent outcomes (NDIS Supports for Participants Rule 3.1(a)); and/or (ii) the acquisition of this support is expected to reduce the long-term funding costs for other supports (NDIS Supports for Participants Rule 3.1(c)).

it is effective and beneficial to you

it supports the maintenance of your informal support network
-
it qualifies as an NDIS support.

Communication and information equipment
(under NDIS Registration Group 0124)
The provision of assistive products designed enhance communication and information management encompasses:

poducts that help a participant to receive, send, produce and/or process information in different forms• pr
-
products that facilitate a participant communicating by language, signs and symbols, receiving and producing messages, having conversations and using communication devices and techniques
-
services to assess and prescribe, deliver, adjust and train a participant in the successful use of an assistive product
-
maintenance, spare parts and consumable items specific to an assistive product.

What is a replacement support?
In some specific circumstances, we can fund supports that are not NDIS supports. We call these replacement supports. When we say replacement support, we mean the service, item or equipment you would like to use instead of the NDIS support or supports in your plan. Only some supports can be replaced and only if we agree in writing can you can buy this support. A replacement support isn’t an extra support. It replaces an existing NDIS support or supports in your plan.

Supports that are not NDIS supports that may be considered replacement supports
Replacement support: smart watches, tablets, smart phones, apps for accessibility/communication purposes
Specific circumstances the support may be considered for replacement
Participants who require the use of a smart watch, tablet or smart phone required to meet communication and accessibility needs.For example, a participant with complex communication needs who uses a tablet as an alternative communication device, which is their only way to communicate and so cannot be shared, where this is the most appropriate solution for their needs Note: Any smart device used for tracking purposes could be considered a restrictive practice and needs to be considered in this context.
